INDIA’S URBAN AWAKENING (as told by Mckinsey Global Institute )

Mckinsey global Institute was established in 1990 where it’s mission is to help leaders in the commercial, public, and social sectors develop a deeper understanding of the evolution of the global economy. MGI’s current research agenda focuses on global market (capitol, labour and commodities ).

The purpose of the research project was to understand how India’s urbanisation might evolve, explore the many problems facing India’s fast growing cities and what policy makers can do to mitigate the strains of urban life in India and maximise the opportunities offered by cities.
Unlike many countries that are grappling with aging population and rising dependency ratios, India has a young and rapidly growing population. India’s urban population grew from the 290 million reported in the 2001 census to an estimated 340 million in 2008, and MGI projects that it could soar upto 590 million by 2030. Urbanisation will spread across India impacting almost every state.  But because the policy makers are not paying any attention to the growing urban population, quality life for citizen’s have declined.
